Wizz Air investigated over baggage fees – how to get cheap flights without being caught out by hidden charges

Wizz Air has become the latest airline to be investigated by Spanish regulators over its baggage fees. The Hungarian budget carrier joins several other low-cost airlines under scrutiny for charging passengers extra for carrying hand luggage - a practice that’s sparked widespread criticism from consumer rights groups.

So what does this mean for holidaymakers looking to travel on a budget? And how can you avoid getting caught out by extra charges? Here’s what you need to know.

What’s happening with Wizz Air?

Spanish authorities have now opened formal proceedings against six airlines, including Wizz Air, Ryanair and easyJet, after finding that charging passengers for carry-on luggage may violate consumer protection laws.

The investigation centres around the practice of charging customers to bring a small cabin bag on board, something many expect to be included in the ticket price. Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs is leading the charge, and has already proposed a €150 million fine across the airlines under investigation.

The key concern? That what looks like a cheap ticket often comes with hidden charges once you've added basic travel needs, like a carry-on bag or sitting with your family.

How to bag a cheap flight (without the baggage drama)

While regulatory pressure might lead to more transparency from airlines in future, there are easy ways you can save now - and avoid being stung by hidden fees.

Our team recently pulled together a full guide on how to find the best flight deals – you can read the full blog here – but here are a few quick wins:

1. Always check what’s included in the ticket

Don’t assume a basic fare includes a cabin bag or seat selection. Double-check what you’re paying for before booking.

2. Be flexible with travel dates

Flying mid-week or outside school holidays can save you hundreds. If your dates are flexible, use price comparison tools that show you the cheapest options across a whole month.

3. Compare total costs, not just the headline fare

That £29.99 flight could end up costing double once you add luggage and other extras. Look at the final cost after add-ons before hitting ‘book’.

4. Travel light if you can

Most airlines still allow a small under-seat bag for free. If you can pack efficiently, you might not need to pay for extra baggage at all.

5. Set price alerts

Sites like Skyscanner and Google Flights let you track fares and get notified when prices drop. It’s one of the easiest ways to snag a bargain.

The bigger picture

While the Spanish investigation might lead to changes down the line, baggage fees aren’t going away overnight. For now, the best way to protect your wallet is to plan smart, pack light and read the fine print.

Because the only surprise you want on holiday is a free upgrade, not a £50 charge at the gate.
